ESL Awareness Week

April 27 - May 4, 2008

We are pleased to announce that, in recognition of both learners and teachers of English as a Second Language, ORTESOL has designated April 27- May 4, 2008

as ESL Awareness Week.

We invite all K-12, adult education, and higher education institutions in Oregon to celebrate ESL Awareness Week by hosting various events and activities.

We encourage instructors and teachers to participate by planning special activities in their classrooms.

Events and activities can include:

• Hosting an Open House
• Giving students a special project or assignment related to ESL learning
• Conducting a writing/poetry/ speech contest
• Collecting recipes and publishing an International Cookbook
• Putting together an exhibition of ESL students' artwork
• Hosting an International Film Festival
• Preparing a show highlighting skills and talents of ESL students
• Setting up display tables in the hallways celebrating ESL materials, teaching methods, cultures/ languages
• Planning a potluck celebration meal
• Inviting someone from a school/ organization to which your learners may go next to speak on opportunities for ESL learners after your program

We invite both ESL learners and instructors to submit articles, poems, and stories related to ESL learning and teaching. We will publish the most interesting ones in the next edition of the ORTESOL Newsletter. Please e-mail your submissions to the Newsletter Editors.

The closing date is May 12, 2008 .

Grants for Members

Action Research

ORTESOL has established a program to provide for action research support. The purpose of the action research program is to encourage and support innovative practices in teaching. Action research consists of projects or ideas that grow from an instructor's desire to know if a new teaching strategy or new materials are working and effective in helping students.
