CALL: Computer Assisted Language Learning

Statement of Purpose

The ORTESOL Computer Assisted Language Learning special interest group is dedicated to exploring issues related to the use of computers as tools in language teaching and learning. We serve the ESL profession in Oregon by identifying best practices, resources and standards related to CALL and sharing our findings with English language educators in our region.

Professional Concerns

  • To encourage our colleagues to take an interest in integrating technology into their teaching practices.
  • To develop and disseminate a list of resources educators can use to learn more about CALL.
  • To elicit regular newsletter articles from members related to CALL.
  • To identify and/or organize professional development opportunities related to CALL in the region and disseminate this information to ORTESOL members.
  • To develop an online repository of resources for CALL.

Academic Concerns

  • To advocate for increased access to technology resources for our colleagues and their students.
  • To encourage institutions to adopt technology standards for ESL teachers and students.
  • To identify, collect and disseminate CALL resources for ESL students and their teachers.

Activities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintain a CALL Web site with links to other CALL resources, lesson plans, articles and professional development opportunities.
  • Organize CALL SIG meetings at annual ORTESOL conferences.
  • Develop a regional network of CALL practitioners and encourage sharing of ideas and resources.
